We have tried to keep the pub traditional, warm and friendly, but have introduced some events that we hope will appeal, not only to the local community, but also attract visitors from further a field. Some of the events that we have held since our arrival include a quiz night, darts matches, private parties, a family fun day, a golf tournament, Father's Day Pie n a Pint, wine & cheese evening, mid summer party and every Tuesday night we have live jazz.
Our doors are always open to host birthday parties, retirement parties, anniversaries and wedding receptions. We are happy to host parties when the pub is closed or open, although when it is open we cannot restrict other customers from coming in, and we can arrange appropriate entertainment and decorations if required.
In addition to the real fire, two lovely beamed bars, there is also a non smoking restaurant area, outside decking, with patio heaters for the great British summer, and a garden with picturesque views over the countryside. In the garden for children of six and over there are swings and some games such as 'giant jenga', jig-saw type play panels; for the younger ones there are ride-on and push-along toys and a small see-saw. There are plenty of tables, chairs and sun umbrellas, so the adults can enjoy a drink and some food whilst keeping a close eye on the children. The garden is enclosed and has a gate keeping children safely away from the car park.
Both well behaved children (under 14 years) and dogs are welcome, although children are not allowed to be up at the bar. High Chairs are available and there is a baby changing unit in the disabled toilet.

Everyone is welcome from young to old and we hope to have thought of something for everyone. We have installed swings and toys in the garden for children of all ages up to 12 years and when inside, children are offered table activities such as colouring/drawing and cards and lollipops (for after their meal!) We also have high chairs and a baby changing unit as well as facilities for the disabled and access for pushchairs or wheelchairs. Customers who choose to be inside are offered a full table service, whether they dine or not, as we feel our customers deserve extra-special treatment, whatever the reason. Most are pleasantly surprised by the quality of service we offer, as our aim is to exceed customer expectations wherever possible.
In addition, to the service we offer on a daily basis, we are also happy to host and cater for private parties, to a price you decide. Alternatively, if you are having a function elsewhere, for example at a Village Hall, and need a licensed bar, we can provide that too.
"Thank you so much for the very warm welcome you gave us today with the very large pot of tea! And it was a beautiful cup of tea as well!! …… Hope very much to come back again. Until then, the very best of wishes and thank you once more." (TB)
"Many congratulations to you Ian and Julie, and of course your staff on your first anniversary at The Brewers Arms. Well done for such an excellent year, you are a great asset to the village. It's so nice to come to such a pleasant venue and your warm welcome." (G&KW)
"A satisfying lunch, promptly and nicely served. On another occasion we shall explore the menu further. We definitely plan to return. Toilet facilities also 100%!" (SB)
For our first year we feel very proud of the fact that the pub won Greene King's area award for the 'Best in Bloom' and achieved a 'Certificate in Excellence' from South and South East in Bloom. We also entered the Publican Magazine Awards, this is a national award ceremony that has nothing to do with Greene King. We entered 'Newcomer of the Year' and whilst we were not outright winners, we were very proud to be one of six finalists and have come back with lots of ideas on how we can make improvements for the benefit of our existing and new customers.
We are members of BII (British Institute of Innkeeping) membership no: 2556207
CAMRA (campaign for Real Ale) membership no: 203717
At the moment, and in no particular order, we have seven people working for us. In addition to us, other faces you will find here are:
Andrew Farrant - Trainee Manager or otherwise affectionately known as our "J.O.A.T." (Jack of All Trades and Master of Many!)
We employed Andrew in May 2005 and have not looked back. He seems to have found his niche in life as he enjoys a variety of roles; he 'waits' on our customers hand and foot, but you are just as likely to find him behind the bar or in the kitchen.
Bill Richardson - Cleaner
Bill is responsible for the cleanliness of the bar, restaurant and toilets and he does a fantastic job. In fact we get regular compliments about the cleanliness of the bar and toilets etc. Bill also very patiently dusts every miniature bottle and ornament we have around the bar and restaurant.
Lizzie Farmer - Kitchen Assistant and Waitress
Lizzie spent time in Spain with her family before coming back to Herstmonceux to continue her studies. She 'popped' in to us on the off chance of a part time job and we very soon had to take her up on her willingness to take on the kitchen cleaning. She continues to do a grand job and because of her bubbly personality, has recently started to do some waiting for us too. Whether in the kitchen or out in the bar Lizzie always has a smile on her face.
Sue Dytrych - Bar Person
Sue worked for Barry & Barb, Alex & Jo and now us. She only works two evenings a week (and occasional extras) but without her commitment to those evenings our one evening off together a week would be impossible.
Ian Farrant - Kitchen Assistant
Brother of Andrew, not that you would know it to look at them together. Anyway, Ian is also a very valued member of the team. Ian helped fill the gap that Lizzie left when she started university and continues to maintain a high standard of cleanliness for us.
Brian Hanks - Director of Operations!
